Surprising things I learnt circumnavigating the world without flying, The Telegraph
Better than island hopping in the Maldives, a safari with the kids and Michelin-starred tasting menus in the Swiss Alps, my most memorable travel experience is circumnavigating the world without flying.
Initially we were looking for a fun escape from London. My boyfriend (now husband – it was that kind of trip) and I bought a giant map and started marking intriguing places. Half joking, we drew a line between them and thought ‘what if we stay on the ground and link these places up?’ No airports, no haste, and no get-out clause – just an old-fashioned adventure with an environmental edge.
Before we knew it, we were sailing across the Atlantic in a rickety Norwegian ketch, cycling up The Rockies on a tandem, and hitch-hiking around China’s Taklamakan Desert. It becane a journey that made me rethink everything, from love to politics.
