Aristi Mountain Resort, The Telegraph
Location
Named after the sleepy village sitting just below (occasionally the gentle sound of chit-chat drifts up from the village square), Aristi is surrounded by the magnificent wilderness of the Northern Pindos National Park. Just over three hours from Thessaloniki, this pocket of north-western Greece is one of Europe's most undiscovered and biodiverse regions. The Tymfi massif dominates the skyline, luring you into the mountains where the dramatic Vikos Gorge, crystal clear Voidomatis River, and 46 carefully preserved Zagori villages await.
Style & character
Built to replicate the stone houses of Zagori's charming villages, Aristi Mountain Resort is a series of lodges connected by cobbled paths and pretty gardens. A flush of modern interiors is tasteful enough not to distract from the epic mountain views. Bold screen-printed artworks, vibrant carpets, tartan blankets, and seasonal floral displays add colour to an otherwise pared-back palette – leaving the abundant sunlight to work its magic.
Service & facilities
The mostly local Aristi team tread that near-impossible line of creating an unstuffy, family-like atmosphere while delivering impeccable service. Although the 26 rooms are huddled onto a narrow slice of the mountainside, the generous lounge and sprinkling of communal terraces provide ample space for moments of solitude. The pine-clad indoor pool and spa area feel distinctly alpine, while treatments infused with local oils and herbs transport you firmly back to Greece. Excursions organised by the hotel include everything from river-trekking and rafting to photography tours and wine-tasting.
